In our last newsletter Bob Sinclair wrote about “The importance of a risk review”. The risk review is an organized process for looking at a person’s total insurance picture to identify areas that need attention. One key aspect of managing risk is the life insurance question.

Planning for the “what if’s of life”

It is very rewarding to see the results of good planning in a client’s life. Just recently, we uncovered one family’s very personal need: an adult child with a chronic mental illness. While the parents were healthy and living, they could support and protect their child. Their fear was after they could no longer be there for their daughter; she might be a target for a financial predator. We had the opportunity to help this family create specific financial and legal strategies structured to protect their daughter. We introduced them to an attorney and trust officer who had experience with Special Needs Trusts. After we accompanied the clients to the meeting, the attorney and trust officer prepared documents designed to take care of their daughter while maintaining her government benefits.

If you follow the media on a routine basis you likely have encountered news about corrupt behavior and financial fraud. Even sophisticated investors can find themselves in a bad situation if they haven’t done thorough due diligence on recommended investments. Most importantly, careful research on the advisors they will trust on a day-to-day basis is imperative.
